Beyond the Stretch: Teaching for Hypermobility & Different Mobility Needs | In-Person $40 | Via Zoom $40
What does it mean to teach a room where some students are chasing more range and others already have too much? How do you cue for stability without assuming “deeper” is always the goal?
This three-hour teaching lab explores how to recognize hypermobility and teach it well, in a mixed-level class where some bodies need more range and others need less. We’ll examine how common cues like “find your edge” and “go deeper” can work against a hypermobile body, and how to offer pathways that build control and stability instead.
Through guided movement, joint-stability-focused posture pathways, realistic classroom scenarios, and short teaching exercises, you’ll explore not only what to offer, but how to offer it. You’ll practice cueing for containment and stability, and using language that supports autonomy and choice rather than performance.
We’ll explore:
How to recognize signs of hypermobility in a general class, without requiring a student to disclose a diagnosis.
Why “find your edge” and “go deeper” aren’t always the right cues, and what to offer instead.
How to cue for joint stability and containment rather than maximum range of motion.
Posture pathways and prop options that support control for a hypermobile body without singling a student out.
How to teach a room where some students need more range and others need less, at the same time.
How to examine a teaching scenario, explain your reasoning, and revise both your words and your actions.
The boundaries of a yoga teacher’s role, including when a student’s needs may go beyond what a group class can safely hold
You’ll move beyond identifying a helpful cue to practicing a coherent teaching approach. Leave with a hypermobility-aware cueing guide, joint-stability-focused posture pathways, and clear scope-of-practice guidance you can bring into your next class.
